I was inspired to create pictures of giraffes after a
safari holiday in Kenya and Tanzania, and I’ve used various media including
mosaic tiles, oils and batik; I’ve also done greetings cards. This batik is
framed in a pre-loved frame but I could post just the batik in a postage tube –
please email for batik and frame sizes.
Price in the frame £38 with free postage to UK mainland.
Batik is a method of dye-ing and waxing cotton
material, starting with the lightest colours first. Thus, I added hot melted
wax to any area I wanted to remain white. Next, I dyed areas green for the
background and waxed that. Some photos show the process, and also another giraffe
batik I was doing at the same time as a commission.
The crackling effect is created at the end by
scrunching the material in a final dye. Once everything was dry, I removed the
wax with a hot iron (and lots of kitchen roll!).
