Initially I painted gesso on the second hand boot so paint would adhere to the rubber, and then I added the designs mainly using POSCA pens. This boot was then varnished, so it should be OK for outdoor use. One photo shows it with a plant - but the free UK post is just for the boot. The photo below shows a similar design on a walking boot.
